The Investigations Bureau includes four sections; Crimes Property, Crimes Persons, Family Services and Vice, Narcotics, and Intelligence. Detectives investigate all crimes not solved by patrol officers' initial investigations and assist patrol officers in more serious investigations. The Identification lab provides latent fingerprint identification, photographs and processes items of evidence at crime scenes, and provides in-service training to field personnel on forensic services. The Property Section ensures that items of evidence are properly preserved and available for on-going investigations, court presentations, and are returned to the rightful owners. The Investigations Bureau also performs various permit processes that require criminal history checks and background investigations on permit applicants.
The Crimes Property section is broken down into the following areas: Residential Burglary/ Theft, Commercial Burglary/ Theft, Auto Theft, Fraud (identity theft, check/ credit card fraud, & embezzlements), and Computer/ High Technology Crimes.
The Crimes Persons section is divided into the following areas: robbery/ homicide (includes assaults & batteries), missing persons, and sex crimes/ crimes against children.
The Family Services section includes Domestic Violence, the Youth Diversion Team, Gang Detectives and School Resource Officers.
The Vice, Narcotics and Intelligence Section is responsible for identifying and apprehending persons engaged in the illegal possession, manufacturing, sales, and use of narcotics and dangerous drugs.
